What is Tea Time, exactly?

Tea Time is where five-ish strangers sit at a cafe with a Host to have a two hour conversation. It's not about anything in particular.

You're meant to know pretty much nothing about the people that come, aside from the fact that they all signed up for this — just like you. It's self-selecting in that sense.

However, it may bring you comfort to know a little something about your Host. If so, just keep reading

Meet your Host, Tess.

(It'll be helpful to know what they look like when you're looking for a group of confused strangers at the cafe.)

Hi I’m Tess and I don’t know how I ended up in Oakland. (I didn’t do it on purpose!) but I’m really glad I did. I generally love talking to strangers but the strangers here are of an especially good variety. Once I tripped on the sidewalk near my house and this older dude pulled up on his bicycle and said, “I saw you walking and I was afraid you were going to trip!” I'm excited to meet more strangers. Because everyone is a stranger until you meet them.

What's your story?

I come from New Jersey, from whole wheat bread, and from a marriage of opposites. A mother with large, capable hands that have always reminded me of tree trunks. A father who can bend light like funny. I love learning new things, fitting them into my brain and connecting them to other things. I think that to be bored is to be boring and to be interested is to be interesting. I believe that if you talk to anyone long enough you will realize that they are a magical mystery and that poetry, like bread is for everyone. (And cake.)

What might we talk about?

I think this might be a trick question! The answer is anything. Why catdog was so creepy, what mochi really is. Favorite smells. I like asking people what the famous stories are from their childhood-- and hoping they won't ask me the same question :) We'll have discussions that feel relevant to the moment and conversations that aren't conversations we've had before. New tea-timers, I'm excited to learn a bit from your magic and to have conversations that spin out of the specificity of the moment! ( and of you.)
