What is Tea Time, exactly?

Tea Time is where five-ish strangers sit at a cafe with a Host to have a two hour conversation. It's not about anything in particular.

You're meant to know pretty much nothing about the people that come, aside from the fact that they all signed up for this — just like you. It's self-selecting in that sense.

However, it may bring you comfort to know a little something about your Host. If so, just keep reading

Meet your Host, Ryan.

(It'll be helpful to know what they look like when you're looking for a group of confused strangers at the cafe.)

I’m serious about science, reading, eating, birds, and not much else. You can usually hear me far before you can see me and I dance whenever there’s music playing, even on a crowded subway platform.

What's your story?

I’m a science journalist and I write mainly about space and physics. I have a near encyclopedic knowledge of early 80s Italian disco, I love any pop culture that happened between 1995 and 2005, and I have been known to cry at the sight of a cute enough dog. I'm an avid birder, have a strange obsession with slime, I’ve hitchhiked from New York to Milwaukee, I have pi memorized to 100 digits, I once sang opera professionally, and I majored in physics. You'll either think I’m very weird or very kind.

What might we talk about?

Dogs, birds, our place in the universe, social injustice, gender and sexuality, slime, the macabre, New York, making it in the world, media, traveling, dogs, what we’re reading, planet earth, how we consume pop culture, how we interact with others, Shrek, our favorite pair of underwear, first impressions, fashion, North Dakota, subcultures, feeling like you haven’t “grown up.”

“Ew, gross!!! But okay tell me more"
